jaguar는 올 해 늦여름에 발표한다는 새로운 버전의 MacOS이다.
꽤나 신경써서 만들고 있는 모양이다.

Code-named “Jaguar,” the next major release of Mac OS X will delight you with the innovation, elegance and ease of use you’ve come to expect from Apple.

The initial release of Mac OS X gave you the power of UNIX with the simplicity of Macintosh. But it merely paved the way for the next generation of hardware and software offerings from Apple and third parties. Here are a few of Jaguar’s extraordinary new features that will take us to the next level.

iChat
Jaguar includes a fun and easy to use instant messaging program, called iChat, that lets you have spontaneous, interactive conversations over the internet. If you already have a mac.com account or use AOL Instant Messenger, you can use those names immediately with iChat. That means you’ll be able to chat with your friends on AIM — and they can chat with you. iChat and Mail work well together, too — you can tell when a buddy is online when an icon is displayed next to one of her emails to you. Simply click on that icon to start an iChat session.

As with other chat programs, iChat lets you exchange files and use smileys. iChat also uses the full Aqua interface to present instant messages in a graphically conversational manner.

Address Book
Jaguar’s Address Book provides a central repository for all your contacts. New in Jaguar, Address Book offers full support for vCards, a standard method of storing contact information. You can exchange vCards with other Bluetooth-equipped devices. If your cell phone has Bluetooth, you can select an Address Book contact and tell your phone to dial the number or send a Short Message Service (SMS) note. Address Book can also notify you of incoming phone calls and their associated Caller ID information.

Sherlock 3
Sherlock always made searching for information on the Internet effortless. In Jaguar, Sherlock makes it simpler to comprehend that information once you’ve found it. Now Sherlock displays search results in an interface tuned for each channel, instead of launching your Web browser. Sherlock 3 offers tons of channels, including movies, stocks, TV guide, flights, package tracking and even the Yellow Pages with inline driving directions. Just ask for a place name, and Sherlock brings up a list of likely candidates complete with map and directions.

Spam Filter for Mail
One of the hazards of online life is the constant bombardment of unsolicited email, a.k.a. spam. Most spam programs use unsophisticated filters to block email. The Mail program in Jaguar, however, uses an advanced semantic inference engine to actually understand the structure of spam. Mail already knows the format and content of many typical spam letters, and also learns what you consider junk mail. It then bases future blocks on content, not email addresses.

Mail includes other enhancements that make it even simpler to manage your online life. Mail now automatically saves your drafts when you quit the program, and opens them again when you relaunch. You can apply multiple criteria to rules, and there are more rule options. You can search across multiple mailboxes, as well as store all mail in a single mailbox.

Rendezvous
AppleTalk pioneered ease-of-use on a proprietary network — now Rendezvous promises to do the same for IP-based networks. Also called ZeroConf, Rendezvous lets your hardware configure itself on networks using the Internet Protocol, tell other devices which services it offers and discover devices on the network, as well as their associated services. You can connect your devices together however you like — wirelessly over AirPort or Bluetooth and by physical connections such as FireWire or Ethernet. Of course Rendezvous works for printers and file sharing, but that’s hardly innovative. As a technology demo, at WWDC 2002, Apple showed the use of Rendezvous to make iTunes into a music jukebox for your whole house. You could keep all your music on the iMac in the den, and then listen to the iMac’s playlists using iTunes on your iBook connected to the living room stereo.

Fast Find
Jaguar adds an iTunes-like search field to both Address Book and the Finder. With Address Book, finding the right contact is a snap. In the Finder, simply type in the name of the file or any text found in a document. The Finder shows you matching documents directly in that window.

Quartz Extreme
Jaguar dramatically improves the performance of Mac OS X with Quartz Extreme. Jaguar lets Quartz offload compositing tasks to a supported* video card, using OpenGL to accelerate the drawing and compositing of graphics. As with the benefits 3D games get from a video co-processor, the main CPU chip(s) can then focus on application-specific needs.

That means your shadows will drop quickly, your genies will appear slicker and your transparencies will layer faster — and Mac OS X can do more processing in the background while you move the foreground.

Universal Access
Millions of people find it physically difficult to use computers. Jaguar goes well beyond federally mandated standards to offer new approaches to computer accessibility. Quartz enables a fully anti-aliased and gorgeously rendered screen magnification, called ZoomView. Rather than merely magnifying part of the screen, ZoomView magnifies the entire screen (you use the mouse to scroll the screen around). Also, Jaguar can read back onscreen text within documents, interface elements and text under the mouse.

Ink
Jaguar features advanced handwriting recognition. Graphics professionals will appreciate the ability to input text via stylus instead of switching to the keyboard. You can write directly in Mail messages and TextEdit documents, or use the InkPad to write text and draw sketches before sending them to your favorite applications. Ink requires an input tablet.

Et Cetera
The Finder features spring-loaded folders to aid in navigation — and is multi-threaded for superior performance... You can browse Windows servers directly in the Finder and connect to Windows VPN networks... Developers received QuickTime 6, the first complete solution for the industry standard MPEG-4 video and AAC audio media streaming... UNIX-based core updated with GCC 3 compiler, CUPS printing, POSIX additions and next generation IPv6 and IPSec networking.
